Expertise

Subjects I can write about without a translator.

I am not a physician and I am not a registered dietitian. Where a claim needs clinical sign-off, I write it so a clinical reviewer can approve it quickly. Everything below is an area where I can read the primary literature directly, judge study quality, and hold my own in an argument with a specialist.

How food is actually produced, by whom, under what constraints, and why recommendations that look sound on a research station fail on a two-hectare farm. This is the subject I know from both ends, having run the trials and then synthesised the literature that trials like mine feed into.

  • Soil fertility, nutrient management and fertiliser policy
  • Smallholder systems, extension and technology adoption
  • Cropping system design, intercropping and rotation
  • Yield gaps and the economics of agricultural inputs

Where this comes from

Five years as a research and development officer, senior agronomist and extension officer in Kenya, running factorial field trials on cover crops and nitrogen rate and advising roughly 1,700 out-grower farmers.

Sustainability writing goes wrong when it reports a benefit without its trade-off. Nitrogen-fixing legumes reduce fertiliser demand and also compete with the cereal beside them. Cover crops build soil and also cost a season of land. I write the whole ledger.

  • Biological nitrogen fixation and fertiliser substitution
  • Cover cropping, residue management and soil carbon
  • Land use efficiency and the land equivalent ratio
  • Climate adaptation in rain-fed smallholder systems

Where this comes from

Designed and ran a two-by-three factorial trial testing lablab and mucuna cover crops against three nitrogen rates on two soil types, and later synthesised the sub-Saharan intercropping literature for a master's meta-analysis.

The link between what a food system produces and what a population can actually eat is where my agricultural training and my food security training meet. I write about diet quality and micronutrient adequacy as questions about supply, price and access, not only about individual choice.

  • Micronutrient adequacy and dietary diversity
  • Food environments, affordability and access
  • Nutrition-sensitive agriculture and biofortification
  • Reading nutritional epidemiology honestly, including its limits

Where this comes from

MSc Food Security at the University of Edinburgh, with distinction in every taught module across nutrition, food policy, vulnerability assessment and quantitative methods.

Personalised nutrition, continuous glucose monitoring and digital advisory products are built on real science that is routinely oversold. I can separate the part of the evidence base that supports a marketing claim from the part that does not, which is the difference between content that passes review and content that gets rewritten.

  • Continuous glucose monitoring outside clinical diabetes care
  • Personalised nutrition and postprandial response research
  • Digital health claims, evidence standards and regulatory caution
  • Agricultural and food technology adoption

Where this comes from

Quantitative evidence appraisal training, plus a working familiarity with the trial literature in this space. Clinical claims are written for clinical review rather than asserted on my own authority.

This is the underlying skill. Give me a contested question and a body of literature and I will tell you what the literature supports, how confident that conclusion is, and where it falls apart. Then I will write it for whoever needs to read it.

  • Systematic search, screening and PRISMA reporting
  • Meta-analysis and meta-regression in R
  • Heterogeneity, sensitivity analysis and publication bias
  • Turning a technical result into a paragraph a non-specialist can use

Where this comes from

Master's meta-analysis of 69 studies and 640 intercrop-versus-sole-crop comparisons, fitting multilevel random-effects models on log response ratios in R with the metafor package.

Where I decline

01

Clinical advice in my own voice

I do not write treatment guidance, dosing, diagnosis or anything a patient might act on without a clinician's name on it. I will research and draft it for a named clinical reviewer.

02

Claims the evidence will not carry

If the study does not support the sentence, I will tell you before we publish it, and offer the strongest version that is true. That is the whole value of hiring a research writer.

03

Volume content at volume rates

Briefs that need twelve pieces a month at a low unit price are better served elsewhere. My work is priced on research depth rather than word count.
